Home energy costs have been going up and will continue to rise.  And once you've made the decision to identify and correct or upgrade your home energy envelope, where do you start?  Even the EPA is saying that an energy scan should be done prior to purchasing a house, much less a house you're already living in.  

Most people may go the route of adding more insulation or replacing windows with triple pane windows. But is that the best or most economical way to go?  There are many ways to proceed with your energy efficiency upgrade options, but they can be expensive and you want to spend smartly. You need to consider other potential problems or incremental improvements that may add up to big savings.

Adding insulation to the attic may be a great idea; but this may not be the best place to start, especially of you don't do it properly. The most common issue I write up in attics is improperly installed insulation.  In a lot of cases, improperly installed insulation can be worst than not having insulation, so it's best to know where and how to install the correct type of insulation for the best effect.

Is your HVAC ductwork well installed and sealed? Do you have major leakage ductwork leakage which is causing your HVAC system to work overtime and your home is never comfortable, or worse there is hot and cold spots in different rooms? HVAC ductwork leakage is common and easily repaired, once you know where the leaks are located.

Are your doors and windows well weather-stripped? Does it feel drafty around these areas?  Even newer homes are often not well sealed at all.

Where should you start to make improvements to your home and help of lower your energy costs? It can be hard to find unbiased information on these different options. Look in the phone book (does anyone still do that) or go online and you'll find all type of gizmos and information available from companies trying to sell a particular product or improvement. While most of these improvements may help, don't you want to know what will give you the most bang for the buck in a minimal amount of time.
