ACOUSTIC TERMITE DETECTION USING PATTERN RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY

Traditional methods of detecting termite infestations rely almost entirely on visual observation, a little guesswork and invasive, destructive techniques. This is usually fine for 95% of the time, but sometimes, under the right conditions, we can go further using technology.

Invented by Peng Lee, former research engineer at the National Center for Physical Acoustics, Accutech's patented handheld acoustic (listening) probes can literally "HEAR" termites at work behind walls, floors and ceilings. These needle-like probes are non-destructive and highly sensitive to termite sounds that can't be heard by the human ear. The probes are applied only to "suspicious" areas identified by Accutech's infrared scan and leave just tiny, virtually indiscernible pinholes in the insertion area. The acoustic signals are swiftly analyzed by specialized Pattern Recognition Software (patent pending) on our laptop.

The handheld listening probes uses the most sensitive and versatile structural-borne acoustic sensors specifically designed for termite detection. Sensors utilize sound amplification technology which minimizes electronic and ambient noise.

When these acoustic signals are fed into the laptop, the software scientifically and objectively analyzes the signals and distinguishes termite noises from non-termite sounds and ambient noise.

The process is quick and simple: The software swiftly compares the incoming audio signals to a large database of pre-recorded audio patterns made by termites and other insects. Matches are made in just a few seconds, and interpretation is easy: The computer's read-out either tells you that termites were detected or termites were not detected.

THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY

Step 1 —Traditional (Visual) Inspection

The 3-Step Accutech Home Inspection Process combines a traditional (visual) inspection with advanced infrared and acoustic scans of the property using a $15,000 state-of-the-art infrared camera, specially designed acoustic sensors and pattern recognition software. With this technology and process, an Accutech inspector can detect problems that may otherwise go undetected, including plumbing leaks, water damage, energy loss, electrical problems, structural concerns and termite infestations. Here’s how it works:

Step 2 - Infrared Scan

An infrared scan detects differences in temperature throughout the house. These temperature variations show up as “hot or cold spots” and provide important clues about the house’s condition, problems and potential problems.

The infrared scan screens for:
• Internal structural concerns
• Roof and ceiling leaks
• Moisture concerns
• Heat/energy loss
• Potential electrical problems
• Insulation deficiencies
• Termites and other insects
• Rats, mice and other pests
• Pipe and duct work leaks

Once suspicious areas (“hot or cold spots”) are identified by the infrared scan, Accutech inspectors perform an in-depth visual inspection of the home, paying special attention to the problem areas in order to identify the nature and cause of the problems.

Step 3 - Acoustic Inspection (Termites)
If the infrared scan (Step 1) detects signs of moisture suggesting termite activity, Accutech inspectors employs its high-tech acoustic sensors which can actually detect termite noises that the human ear cannot hear. Suspicious signals are fed into a laptop equipped with specially developed Pattern Recognition Software that recognizes and identifies ONLY termite sounds.
