As a homeowner, chances are you are trying to keep your home as beautiful and new as possible. It can be upsetting when your carpet or hardwood gets damaged. Although this is bound to happen over time, it can be very disheartening if something happens to relatively new flooring. There are a few things that can be done to prevent damage to your flooring so that it lasts longer and continues looking like new.
Hardwood
Hardwood is one of the most valuable and desirable types of flooring for many people, but it is also one of the ones that shows abuse the worse. The smallest incident can scratch up wood flooring or make the finish look dingy. Some ways to avoid ruining the luster of the hardwood involve not only cleaning, but also being careful what goes on the floor. Be sure to dust mop often to clean, but never use a wet-mop, as this can destroy the flooring. Try not to use wood cleaning products. Add doormats and area rugs to the floor to collect any dirt and avoid scratches, and make sure you use caution when moving furniture or anything with wheels across the floor.
Carpet
Carpet is one of the most common flooring types because it can often be cheaper than other flooring, and easier to install. Your carpet should last around 10 to 15 years if treated correctly. This involves thinking about the room before choosing the carpet. For more high-traffic areas, it may be wise to consider a more durable carpet. Once the carpet is installed, be sure to vacuum regularly and keep mats at the doors for people to wipe their feet so that dirt doesn’t get on the carpet. Have family and guests alike take their shoes off at the door so that they are not walking on the carpet with them on.
Other Flooring
There are some less common types of flooring that you may not think as much about maintaining, but these flooring types do exist commonly in kitchens and bathrooms, and even in your garage. You want to make sure you are doing what you can to keep these floors looking nice, as well, because neglecting them ruins the like-new feel of the home and they will stand out more if they are next to carpet or hardwood that you have taken better care of. These are laminates, vinyl and even concrete. Be sure you are looking up on caring for these surfaces, as well, to keep your home looking nice and new.
